Just as the Pages of the Seraglio are divided into two chambers, so too are the young women divided into two main apartments, known as odas. These rooms serve both as their workplaces and their living quarters. Here the women spend their days sewing, weaving, and embroidering fine garments and decorations. At night, they sleep on raised platforms, each woman having her own separate bed.
To maintain discipline and proper behavior, every group of five women is supervised by a Kadın, a mature and respected matron. Her duty is to observe their actions and conversations and to prevent anything improper or immodest. She listens carefully to what is said and ensures that the rules of modesty and obedience are strictly followed.
Training in Music, Dance, and Manners
In addition to their workrooms, the women have special chambers dedicated to music and dancing. In these spaces, they are taught how to move gracefully, speak politely, and carry themselves with elegance. This training is considered essential, as a refined manner and pleasing presence were believed to be the surest ways to attract the Sultan’s attention.

From among these women, the Queen Mother carefully selects those who will serve directly in her court.
